How to Create a Transparent PNG Online for Free

A transparent PNG is an indispensable asset for web design, branding, and digital graphics. You need transparent PNGs for logos that sit on any background, icons that blend into UI elements, and product images that work on any page layout. Camisual makes it easy to either create from scratch or convert an existing image to a transparent PNG.

Two ways to get a transparent PNG

You can create a graphic from scratch on a transparent canvas and export it as PNG. Or you can remove the background from an existing image using the AI background removal tool and then export as PNG. Both approaches are covered below.

Method 1: Create a graphic on a transparent canvas

  1. 1

Open a new design with no background

Sign in at camisual.com, click "New Design", and choose your canvas size. Critically, do not add a background rectangle. The default canvas is transparent (shown as a grey checkerboard) and will export as a transparent PNG.

  2. 2

    Design your graphic

Add shapes, text, or images as needed. Any areas of the canvas left empty will remain transparent in the exported PNG.

  3. 3

    Export as PNG

Click "File" then "Export". Select PNG. Do not check any "flatten" or "add background" option if one appears. Download. The exported file has a transparent background.

Method 2: Remove a background from an existing image

  1. 1

    Upload your image

Create a new design and upload your image via "Add" and then "Upload Image".

  2. 2

    Remove the background

Select the image, click "Edit Image" in the left Images panel, click the "BG" tab, and click "Remove Background". Apply when satisfied.

  3. 3

    Export as PNG

Export via "File" and "Export", select PNG, and download. The result is a transparent PNG with only the subject remaining.

Checking your PNG is truly transparent

After downloading, open the PNG in a browser tab by dragging it into the browser window. If the background is transparent, you will see the browser's default grey or white checked pattern showing through. If you see a solid white or coloured background, check that you exported as PNG and not JPG.

Tip

Some Windows applications show a white background when previewing PNGs because they do not render the alpha channel in preview mode. Open in a browser or image editor to confirm true transparency.
