What makes a good meme
The classic meme format uses a bold, outlined sans-serif font (traditionally Impact) in white with a black stroke, placed at the top and bottom of a square or landscape image. The text contrast against the stroke means it is readable on any background. Camisual lets you replicate this exactly.
Step-by-step: Make a meme in Camisual
- 1
Create a new design
Sign in at camisual.com and click "New Design". A 1080x1080px canvas works well for social media memes. If you want a classic wide meme format, try 1200x628px.
- 2
Upload your meme image
Click "Add" in the top menu then "Upload Image". Select your photo or meme template image. Resize it to fill the canvas using the Select tool.
- 3
Add the top text
Click "Add" then "Add Text". Type the top line of your meme caption. In the left Text section, set the font to a bold heavy font. Increase size to 70 to 90pt. Set the text colour to white. Then look for the "Stroke" option in the Text section and set a black stroke with a width of around 3 to 5px.
- 4
Position the top text
Drag the text object to the top of the image. Use the horizontal alignment button in the Text section to centre it.
- 5
Add the bottom text
Add a second text object with the same style. Type the punchline and drag it to the bottom of the canvas.
- 6
Export as JPG or PNG
Click "File" then "Export". Select JPG for a smaller file or PNG for full quality. Your meme downloads instantly with no watermark.
Advanced meme formats
For newer meme formats, text is often placed below the image or in a white bar below it. Add a white rectangle shape below the image and place your text on top of it for this style. The multi-panel meme format can be created by placing multiple images side by side on a wide canvas.
