How to Make a LinkedIn Banner Online for Free

Your LinkedIn banner (also called the LinkedIn background photo) is a prime piece of personal branding real estate. A professional banner with your name, role, and a clear value proposition makes your profile stand out from the default grey. This guide shows you how to design one in Camisual in under five minutes.

LinkedIn banner dimensions

LinkedIn recommends a background photo of 1584x396 pixels. On mobile, the left and right edges may be cropped, so keep key text and visual elements in the central 1000px horizontally.

Step-by-step: Design a LinkedIn banner

  1. 1

    Set up the canvas

Sign in at camisual.com, click "New Design", go to Social Media presets, and choose "LinkedIn Banner" (1584x396px). If it is not listed, use Custom Size and enter those dimensions.

  2. 2

    Set a professional background

Draw a full-canvas rectangle in Shape mode. Professional, understated colours work best for LinkedIn: deep navy, slate grey, dark green, or black. You can also use a subtle gradient from your brand colour to a darker shade.

  3. 3

Add your job title and field

Add a text object on the left side of the canvas with your current job title and specialty. Use a clean, readable font at around 40 to 50pt, in white or light grey. This is the most important text on the banner.

  4. 4

    Add a supporting line

Below the job title, add a smaller text line with your skills, industries, or a short value statement such as "Helping B2B SaaS companies grow through content". Keep this under 60 characters.

  5. 5

    Add a photo (optional)

You can add a professional headshot or branded image on the right side. Remove the background using the Image Editor BG tab so it sits cleanly over the banner background.

  6. 6

    Export and upload

Export as PNG or JPG. In LinkedIn, go to your profile, click the camera icon on the background area, and upload the file.

What to include on a LinkedIn banner

The most effective LinkedIn banners feature a clear professional title, a one-line value proposition or specialty, and optionally a website URL or LinkedIn profile URL. Keep design elements clean and minimal since readability on a small screen is critical.

Tip

Avoid putting important text in the bottom-left corner of the banner. That area is partially covered by your circular profile photo on desktop view.
